The AEIS is a centralized test set by MOE that focuses mainly on English and Mathematics. AEIS is known as Admissions Exercise for International Students assesses the English literacy, numeracy and reasoning skills of each individual applicant. Every international student who wishes to get a place in a mainstream school, needs to be successful in this test.
Majority of foreign families arriving in Singapore would find the cost of the primary and secondary level education is considerably high compared to other parts of the world. The best alternative is to get a place in the mainstream school as it would be less than half the amount of an international school based in Singapore. By joining the local school, the foreign students will be with Singaporean school children and this will make it easy for them to assimilate to the local culture and ‘fit-in’ easily. Once your child enrolls into a mainstream school, following through with the traditional educational process becomes the best thing for the child. Taken into consideration, the economic, academic and social factors, it is agreeable that the mainstream schools offer the best option.
International students are able to apply the AEIS test for admission into Primary 2 to 5 and Secondary 1 to 3. It is important to know that MOE does not recommend that there be more than 2 years between an international student and their respective peers.
The AEIS centralized test is normally conducted in the month of September of every year. The registration for the test will be made available two months before the actual test. These information will be available when the date draws near.
The outcome of the AEIS test will be available online, it can be viewed at the MOE's website on the release date in the morning. A successful applicant will simply be informed on which school they have been posted to. Each posting offer is based on the student’s scores, the availability of spaces in each particular school and their place of residence when in Singapore. Absolutely no transfer requests will be entertained by MOE.
Five steps of AEIS:
1. Registration
2. Receiving of entry proof
3. Attending the actual test
4. Release of the outcome and school offer
5. Reporting to the respective school
Unquestionably, going through the process of the AEIS can be a little frustrating. However, there are certain steps that you can take to ensure that a mainstream Singaporean education is the best fit for your child.
